BACKGROUND AND FUN FACTS
Old Jerome High School Background
· Building A and B were built in 1923.
· Building C was built in 1922 as a hospital, but never used as a hospital.
· Building G was built in 1936, as the high school gymnasium.
· Jerome High School students first attended the high school in 1924 (first graduating class from the school was in 1924).
· The last class for Jerome High School attended the high school and graduated in 1951.
· The class of 1960 of Mingus Union High School graduated from the auditorium (but did not attend at the high school).
· From 1961 to 1973, Mingus Union High School students attended the high school.
· Verde Exploration purchased the high school in 1974. All of the buildings were in very poor condition.
· Spaces in the buildings have been rented to Jerome artists and businesses since 1974.
· Currently, about 33 spaces are being leased.
Fun Facts:
The architectural firm of Lescher & Mahoney from Phoenix, Arizona designed all of the buildings. Lescher & Mahoney also designed the United Verde Hospital, now known as the Grand Hotel, and the Little Daisy Hotel.
· The walls and the ceilings between floors in Building C are solid concrete, about a foot thick, with the original pipes inlaid in the walls and floors.
· There is a beautiful 270° view from the parking lot of Building G.
· Specially-curved lumber was used for the roof of Building G, creating the first domed roof in Arizona.
· Several plays were put on each year by the high school drama students at the auditorium and other community events were held at the auditorium.
· The high school cafeteria was known for its superb lunches.
· The high school buildings were built on the largest parcel of flat land in Jerome: approximately 3.7acres.
