Featured Artist of the Month:  Damian Gomes

Picture
Welcome to one of our newest artists in Building A, Damian Gomes. Visit him during his first Open Studio Art Show in Jerome on Saturday, March 7th, between 4:30 - 9:00 p.m., upstairs in Studio 302.

Damian Gomes is a self-taught abstract figurative painter working primarily in oil and acrylic.

With references to surrealism, Gomes' wildly gestural neo-expressionist forms explore themes of life and death, socio-cultural phenomena, and other existential questions.

Frequently macabre, sensual, and darkly comic human images figure prominently into Gomes' work.

The journey from the sublime to the absurd is populated by religious and profane characters, and rendered in an introspective, self-effacing style.

"What the completed painting says is sometimes the answer to a question I hadn't yet asked. "

Gomes lives and works in Jerome.

Damian's artwork is currently for sale, with a wide-range to choose from. Check out this artist's variety of work, and support local art.

Meet Christie Helm
Building A, upstairs Studio 304

Picture
Christie is also new to the Old Jerome High School Art Center, but not new to the art scene.

For the past decade Helm's paintings have dealt with rhythmic repetitions of vertical linear motifs. Coinciding with her moving to Brazil in 2012, Helm's work began to change decisively. A new, strict ordering emerged, along with a refined sense of color. Stripes of white and one or two colors seem to grow in expanding steps, only to be interrupted by wider bands and the initiation of a new sequence. There is an inherent musicality in these compositions, a sense of stricture and release, anticipation and fulfillment. This sense of ongoing possibility reached a culmination in Ode to Cadere.

Meet Christie during the Art Walk and check out her vibrant artwork. And don't forget to walk around campus to meet all of our artists.

Dylan Jung will be hosting a Coffee Tasting & Movie Night
Building A, Upstairs Studio 300

Picture
Coffee lovers, don't miss this! Verde Forge Coffee Co. is booming. Come up to Jerome and meet the mastermind behind it all. While you're there, stick around for Movie Night in the studio.

Verde Forge Coffee Co. is a small and humble specialty coffee company based in Jerome, AZ. Founded by seasoned coffee professional Dylan Jung, his goal is simply to provide “Good coffee for good people doing good things.”

Dylan has worked in cafes for the last 15 years, and served many regulars their coffees, lattes, espressos and teas. It has been a long-time dream of his to start his own business in the coffee industry. Once he encountered the craft of roasting coffee, he knew he couldn’t turn back. Verde Forge is the company he hopes will provide many a tasty cup of coffee to communities of people for a long time to come.

John & Lauri Maeder, of Desert Lace Studio, Offering
Free Tours during Art Walk. Building C, Studio 100

Picture
‘Husband and wife artists, John & Lauri Maeder, have discovered a method of removing the fiber from within the pads of the iconic prickly-pear cactus in all of its intricate and beautiful detail. They roll the fiber against copper and sterling silver embossing the unique pattern into the surface of the metal. When the fiber is rolled, it is crushed and falls apart, ensuring that no two pieces of their jewelry are alike, each piece is unique. Using the fiber and the skin of the cactus, they also make hats, wall art panels, sculptures, lighting, furniture, kaleidoscopes, and more. They are the only artists in the world utilizing cactus in this manner.’

Stop by his studio and pick up a coffee mug, a set of plates, a large vase or vessel - each one is made by hand, no two are alike. Beautiful glazes make his pieces unique. August Featured Artist of the Month:  Beth Courtright-Detwiler

Picture

Picture
"Art is my charter on the way to knowing and being known. I like using primary and secondary colors, with contrasting black and white, because it reminds me of childhood." - Beth Courtright-Detwiler

Beth's painting style is heavily influenced by "symbolist" and "abstract-figurative" artists of the early to mid 20th Century Moderns. She also has a great deal of interest in the iconic and intriquing images of ancient civilizations, particularly the cultures of the Ancient Near East. Beth likes naive art, outsider art and urban street art genres because of their authenticity in expression. Her studio will be hosting an ART POP-UP event at the Jerome Art Center on Saturday, August 4th. This free public arts event is open to visitors of all ages and will be held during the day, from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m., and again during the evening's Open Studio Jerome Art Walk tour, 5 - 8 p.m. You can find Beth in Building A, Studio 301.

Picture
Karon Leigh invites families with children ten and under to participate in a free collaborative painting process, working together to create a mural-sized painting celebrating life in the Verde Valley from 10am – 1pm in studio 201 of building A. When children engage in hands-on art activities, they learn much better in all disciplines. Collaborative art projects connect children with a shared language that crosses other cultural boundaries. The finished work will be on display during Art Walk, 5-8pm.
